Core Components

Personal development is a core part of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), helping scholars build self-awareness, self-regulation, confidence, and responsible decision-making. It aligns with the five SEL competencies:

1. Self Awareness

Recognizing emotions, strengths, values, and building confidence.

2. Self-Management:

Regulating emotions, setting goals, practicing discipline, and managing stress.

3. Social Awareness:

Showing empathy, respecting diversity, and demonstrating social responsibility.

4. Relationship Skills:

Communicating effectively, building positive relationships, and resolving conflicts constructively.

5. Responsible Decision-Making:

Considering consequences, applying ethical principles, and making value-based choices.

Progress Reflection

Progress Reflection meetings evaluate student performance, review past tasks, provide feedback, and set new goals. Advisors are expected to meet with scholars regularly (weekly or biweekly), maintain strong communication with students and parents, and guide planning throughout the year. Meetings must be at least one week apart, with a minimum duration of 10 minutes (individual) or 30 minutes (group). This mandatory category is worth 8 points, allows up to 20 entries annually, and supports SEL development in self-awareness, self-management, and relationship skills.

Participating In Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-curricular activities help students develop skills beyond the classroom and support college applications. Categories include clubs, advanced study teams, and sports (school or approved out-of-school programs with proof).

Mandatory for most students (optional for seniors). Worth 5 points, up to 60 sessions per year.

Scholars enter their extra-curricular activities information in their PowerSchool student account under “Participating Extra-Curricular Activities”.

Character Education

Character Education builds ethical values, responsibility, empathy, and respectful behavior. Advisors use CYSP-provided lessons (20–30 minutes each, including presentation and discussion). Each lesson must cover a different topic.

Mandatory for all students. Worth 10 points, up to 15 entries per year.

Only advisors enter their character education information in their PowerSchool account under “Character Education”.

Book Completion

Reading strengthens comprehension, thinking, and writing skills. Students read level-appropriate books and submit a report or AR score (minimum 80% if applicable).

Mandatory for all students. Worth 10 points, up to 20 books per year.

Advisors enter their Weekend Enrichment Program information in their PowerSchool student account under “Weekend Enrichment Program”.

Weekend Enrichment Program

 

Weekend Enrichment extends learning through school-planned academic or leadership activities. Minimum sessions: 2 (grades 5–8) and 3 (high school).

Optional but high-value: 30 points, up to 20 entries per year.

SEL Focus: Relationship Skills.

The entry to Log:

Scholars enter their individual test prep information in their PowerSchool student account under “Standardized Test Preparation”.

Standardized Test Preparation

Students complete test prep outside school hours to improve skills and identify strengths and weaknesses. Tutoring and in-class activities do not count.

Mandatory for most students (optional for seniors). Worth 5 points, up to 80 sessions per year.

SEL Focus: Self-Management.

Scholars enter their College/Scholarship Applications information as 1 entry for 1 complete application in their PowerSchool student account under “College/Scholarship Applications”.

College / Scholarship Applications

Students complete and log college or scholarship applications (1 entry per completed application).

Mandatory for seniors; optional for other high school students. Worth 5 points, up to 6 entries per year.

Scholars enter their College/Scholarship Applications information as 1 entry for 1 complete application in their PowerSchool student account under “College/Scholarship Applications”.

Leadership Role

Leadership opportunities build responsibility, communication, and decision-making skills. Categories include Athletic Team Leader, School Club Leader, Community Service Leader, and Academic Competition Leader (up to 50 points per category, 200 total).

Optional for all students.
