Physical Fitness

Exercise is essential for maintaining health, improving fitness, and preventing a sedentary lifestyle. Regular physical activity boosts scholars’ focus, well-being, and happiness. In CYSP, scholars must complete physical fitness hours outside of school routines, either at home or with their group; this category is mandatory for most (optional for seniors), worth 3 points, and allows up to 50 hours annually. Physical fitness also supports social-emotional learning by enhancing overall well-being.

Core Components

1

Self-Awareness

Physical fitness activities build body awareness, helping scholars understand their emotions, stress, and changes in mood and energy, strengthening emotional self-awareness.
2

Self-Management

Regular physical activity builds self-discipline through goal-setting, routines, and perseverance. These skills also strengthen emotional regulation, helping scholars manage stress and anxiety.
3

Social Awareness

Group physical activities build social awareness by promoting cooperation, communication, and empathy, helping scholars understand others and form stronger relationships.
4

Relationship Skills

Physical fitness activities build relationship skills through collaboration, conflict resolution, and communication, helping scholars form and maintain positive relationships.
5

Responsible Decision-Making

Physical fitness promotes responsible decision-making by encouraging healthy choices like proper nutrition and staying active. These skills carry over into other areas, supporting ethical and safe decisions in everyday life.
6

Emotional Regulation

Physical activity reduces stress, eases anxiety, and boosts mood by releasing endorphins. Scholars who stay active often feel more balanced and better equipped to handle stress.
7

Confiendce and Self-Esteem

Reaching fitness goals boosts scholars’ confidence and self-esteem. As they see physical progress, their self-assurance grows, improving overall emotional well-being.

Personal Physical Activities

CYSP promotes physical fitness as part of a holistic approach to developing students’ physical, social, and emotional well-being. Physical fitness hours must be completed outside of regular school routines and are mandatory for most students (optional for seniors), worth 3 points, with up to 50 hours allowed per year. Advisors may guide students on healthy habits, including nutrition and staying active—such as aiming for 10,000 daily steps—and encourage activities like sports, biking, or jogging to support self-management skills.
